Chapter 3

Once Bart had settled on this port called Gordonsville as a destination he seemed fixated on it. It became the place where all things wrong would be made right, where the uncertain would be resolved. I still thought that any time he wanted, if he really wanted it, he could put down his telephone and booze and drag Janet to the stateroom and turn things around between them. She wanted him to show her a good time. He didn't need some tropical destination. She didn’t want me in particular either, but if Bart wasn’t going to make an effort to make her feel sexy and adventurous, she was going to do it without him. Given the available choices, that meant me. She wasn't about to waste her vacation time.

For whatever reason, although he had never been there and knew precious little about it, other than it lay on a favorable tack, Gordonsville somehow represented the turn around to Bart. Not that he would sail overnight to get there, but he showed it to me on the charts a dozen times, as if it wasn't enough that the coordinates were dialed into the GPS. Sometimes in the evenings, after his phone calls and while we ate dinner, he read the skimpy details of the place to us from his cruising guide. He even called ahead and booked a slip in the marina.

I don't get Bart. I didn't then and don't now. Maybe he thought Janet would fall in love with the place for some reason and decide he was some kind of sailor hero and start fucking him again instead of being pissed at him. Of course his drinking was cutting into the time he would have been able to do that if he could get her interested again.

At any rate, it was almost a relief when, one afternoon as we dropped anchor in a nice little bay, Bart told us, “We will make Gordonsville tomorrow.”

Janet and I looked at each other. If her brain was working like mine, two things came into it at once. The first was what happens then? The next was what we could do the last night available to us that was special?

“I have to make a number of calls tonight,” Bart said. “This fucking mess with my business has to get cleaned up. So stay out of my way and don't bother me about dinner.”

“Will you take me on an adventure?” she asked in a whisper.

“Anything you want,” I said, not sure what options were available to us.

“Wait here,” she said.

A few moments later she came back dressed in a tee shirt, shorts and tennis shoes. “Grab some shoes,” she said.

“Where are we going?”

She smiled. “To a party, I hope.”

That didn't explain much, but I was in for the ride.
